The TMCSEA Satellite Programs are a K-8 self-contained special education program for member district students with cognitive and multiple learning challenges in need of a functional curriculum. These two classrooms are located at Rankin School District #98, Pekin, IL. Instruction is provided in the classrooms, school and community and integration is provided with typically-developing peers. Community instruction enhances the transition process by allowing the students to use the functional skills in a real-life setting. Students are assessed through the Illinois Alternate Assessment, with scores indicating progress. Teachers and paraprofessionals participate in ongoing staff development.
Tips For a more functional curriculum:
- Visual supports enhance communication.
- Student jobs in the classroom and school building teach responsibilitiy and job skills.
- Teaching personal identifying information is important.
