High School Room 1
In High School Room 1 we focus on improving student's ability to communicate. There are a variety of different ways that the students can communicate. The most common way is for the students to use picture icons or PECs to request what it is that they may want. A common program used for picture icons is Boardmaker (picture #2 below). Another way the students may communicate is with a speech generating device such as the DynaVox and Prentke Romich devices(the orange device below). Some students also use small communication devices, such as the GoTalk4 or a GoTalk 32, which allows the students to hit single buttons from an appropriate field to give a response. A picture of 4 switches is shown below. We can also use iPads and some apps to help our students communicate as well. Using both the PECs and the communication devices, we focus on Core Vocabulary. Core Vocabulary are the words that are more frequently used, and used across multiple settings.
We are also focusing on improving the students' life skills. The students will complete a variety of different tasks throughout the day that focus on independent living. Some of the tasks include vacuuming, sweeping, and shredding paper. We also have a washing machine and a dryer in the classroom so the students are working on the steps of laundry: washing, drying, folding, and putting laundry away, or delivering it to other classrooms. Students are also working on selling and delivering sodas a couple times a day. During the soda activity, students are working on using their communication device to go through a script - or specific conversation - to the people they are interacting with. This helps improve the students level of independent communication. Finally, the students are also working in our kitchen area, learning how to properly make simple foods, such as trail mix, cookies, chex mix, and popcorn. We hope to continue working on different foods for our students throughout the year.
Ultimately, we are focused on preparing our students for life after school. Our students will transition into a day training facility. These facilities provide our students with an environment to continue to grow and develop as independently as possible. While at a facility such as Tazewell County Resource Center (TCRC) or Logan Mason Rehabilitation Center (LMRC), the students will be supervised and supported by staff throughout the day, with a focus on functional living and vocational skills.
